@danpower-JP the simple answer to your question? Manpower. While the Essex class has more capability than a CVL; they also require a huge manpower load. Something most navies did not have a ton of. Plus the availability of surplus Royal Navy carriers.

@marcusfranconium3392 there is a legitimate need to support domestic industry.Buying imported does not help local shipyards or aviation jobs. Also both had independent military goals.

They played a huge part in the Guadalcanal campaign and again in the Philippines. Their ability to operate at night and in confined Waters semicolon made them optimal compared to larger surface ships.
