Good service career overall. Like many of her USN counterparts, just never in the starring role.

He's referring to supercharged powder loading. Adding more propellant to boost the range of the projectile . due to the inability to increase the barrel elevation.

Boilers are not near the magazines.

@QuizmasterLaw overall while there was a lot of technological advance in 20 years; ships built at the end of World War I were still quite relevant in 1939. Most were lacking however in anti-aircraft defense. Mostly due to the rapid advance of aircraft technology. In 20 years aircraft had become far more lethal. As to your example of modern day Russian Navy? You're talking more of a 30 to 40 year Gap in many cases. The Russians have lacked consistent funding, training and maintenance. Due to lack of bases and long range logistics they also are not capable of long deployment voyages as a surface Force.

@waynesworldofsci-tech is that dash speed or sustained?

@waynesworldofsci-tech Power boosts? Not sure you can do so really? Nor is the hull going to improve on drag or the props get more efficient.

@johnshepherd8687 by the same token, battleships generally do not travel without escorting Destroyers or Cruisers in support. They operate as part of a task force. Not just random aimlessly looking for one on fights.

@douglasplatt7083 actually quite a few. Notable action is of course Bismarck. You saw torpedo actions in the Solomon's campaign. And of course there's the famous torpedo action of Taffy three at the Battle of Samar. There was also the Battle of Narvik.

@michaelmacleod7051 it's a completely awful idea. Nor would you be able to support jet aircraft adequately. They considering the huge number of carriers already available purpose-built? It's just a silly idea from the get-go.
1
@semimiller7609 You are just rearranging the deck chairs. Changing hulls does not fundamentally change the problems of the German Navy.

@michaelmacleod7051 it's not a modular system exactly. But basically, yes.

@jasondouglas6755 if you don't mind, I'll take this question. Segregation was in full effect in both The Navy and Marine Corps. African Americans were barred from the Marine Corps until 1943. As for the United States Navy? African Americans allowed in the naval service but restricted to enlisted ratings of Stewards and mess attendants. There were no African Americans in the Naval Academy. And the first black officers only appeared very late in the war coming out of ROTC and OCS. As the war continued, African Americans were assigned duties primarily in support roles such as cargo loading and unloading. This situation continued well after the war until President Truman's order of desegregation in 1948. It did not achieve true mobilization until the Korean War. The USS Mason, a Destroyer Escort is noteworthy in US Navy history as being the first ship with an all African-American crew during World War II.

@icefox192 you can take depth readings of the area to be mined. You generally lay them in areas of high traffic. And in relatively shallow Waters.

@jasondouglas6755 🤔hmmmmmmmmm the hand guy? Good question.

@jasondouglas6755 🙋🏽♂️ glad to help.

🤔 short answer? Would the world be a better place if Gordon Ramsay was making bratwurst and sauerkraut instead of beef Wellington?
1
@pork_cake what do you base this claim on?
1
@Knight6831 the short and obvious answer to your question? French defense spending was focused on building the Maginot Line. Thus, French Navy took a back seat.

@johnshepherd8687 the glass half full view might be, because everything else got sunk the night before? 😒🥃

It means an increased powder charge.

@TheMarelis you would not believe how many times this has been asked in 3 years? And the short answer to your question is no. They're not designed to penetrate the thicknesses involved. Tank rounds are not going through a foot of armor.
1
@TheMarelis The big thing with ships is that unlike tanks they have compartments, voids and fuel tanks. There is no one space to enter and kill. Also those anti-tank rounds generally Focus blasts in very small holes. You need major openings to cause flooding. The armor theory does not transfer over and the ranges are longer.
1
@TheMarelis nope.

@davidrenton great topic. Great many to pick from. Will always have a soft spot for the great John Ford epic, "They were Expendable."
