@Cholin3947 that's kind of a answer that depends if you are looking at behind or ahead in time? This still the era of colonial empire. Friends and foes have interests in trade from Africa, Asia and the Americas. The Dutch used subs to great effect in the Next war in the Far East.

It wouldn't have worked out that way. They still would have obeyed the cruiser rules of the time. And would not fire without warning.

I believe like on other submarines with deck guns; ammunition is just passed by hand?

It's a big ocean. And the convoy system really didn't get going in the Atlantic in the first years of the war. And enemy Nations have far-flung interest in Asia and Africa as well as the Americas. There's plenty of solo cargo routes they would have interdicted.
