@SableLowry offhand? Yamamoto was still commander-in-chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy combined Fleet. I believe the story goes he was on some sort of inspection tour of forward areas. Information about this was leaked. And thus the United States formed shoot-down plans to intercept him. He was shot down near Bougainville in 1943.

@balinthavlik7238 there was an entire Aleutians campaign. Not as well-publicized or flashy as say North Africa or even the china-burma-india theater. But there was significant action there.

@bkjeong4302 🤔......Other than environmental reasons? I'm not sure why you would make the effort?

@themanformerlyknownascomme777 it's just one of those projects that gets put on the back burner in the world of infrastructure projects. Always on the wish-list, never in the budget. Just like locally, it took decades to get a connector between Interstate 95 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Something you should have done back in the 50s.

@bkjeong4302 that's a lot of effort just to get fuel? Not to mention the risk of contamination? I would guess maybe the PT Boat Squadron in the Philippines would resort to something like that considering the lack of field Supply? Trying to get wet coal out of a sunk ship seems problematic. The main reason I could think of is a Pearl Harbor type situation. Where you wanted to empty fuel tanks from ships to assist in the Salvage and stop any kind of environmental problems.
