Mr. Langley, built a plane that never really flew. Yet, is honored with a ship name. Yet the man who gave us Naval Aviation, Eugene Ely; in 100 plus years has never been honored. 😡

@ReptilianLepton So far the Reputation of the Ford class is one step above Cluster bleep..... Word in the Navy is that the 4 ordered, are it for now...

@testfortester7131 Power bag material not burnt in the combustion. Such as these.... https://youtu.be/MTW_xpK-Twc
3
@RedXlV Well.....🙄 The "traditions" and the USN name system are a mixed bag.
3
@evanwickstrom5698 There's nothing to check. Both were crappy, nearly unflyable and moved a few yards. That it is barely flying.
3
@evanwickstrom5698 Okay, your President of the Sam Langley Fan Club. And his work in Astronomy and inventing the Bolometer are duly praised. As for his aviation contribution? A golf clap from me. 👏😷
3
@MrTScolaro Nope..... https://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htwin/articles/20200315.aspx
2
Uh, because it's the Independence Class of CVL.....😞
2
@boydgrandy5769 It was no longer a carrier in 1941. It was a Seaplane tender.
2
@MartinCHorowitz Uh, retract your comment. Langley did no such thing and had been Sunk in February of 1942.
2
@evanwickstrom5698 Evil Kenvel could make a Kawasaki "fly" too. Sorry, Langley deserved a history golf clap. Not a ship...👏😴
2
cargo booms. The Original ship was used to deliver coal. Those are for lifting the coal out the hold.
2
CVN? Aircraft carrier, Nuclear powered.
1
It's February, 1942. Just what do you expect on a support ship?
1
@Paladin1873 In a perfect world how many escorts are putting on this task group? It's a plane ferry and tanker. How many DD's do have to spare?
1
@Paladin1873 Not unprepared.... They're caught while beefing defense over the region. The US expects war. But in 1942.... All moves and updates are for war After the New Year. They ran out of time...
1
@Paladin1873 In fairness to FDR, the focus was on Germany and the U boat war in the Atlantic. While Japan was sending diplomats to talk Peace... The threat from Japan was seen as a Western Pacific region issue.
1
@ardenelenduil2334 VLS vs. the open launchers? No added benefit really vs cost. The CG-47'S needed them for the air defense role. The ships were retired due to the post Cold War draw down.
1
@arkhaan7066 Your basically describing the German Graf Spee.
1
@boydgrandy5769 Wrong... The Langley was needed to ferry planes to defend Java. That is how she was sunk. Moving P 40's to stop the Invasion. They failed...
1
@Drachinifel Delusional....🙄 My thought as well.
1
@Vespuchian Reasonable range?😏 Does the name Ferdinand Magellan ring a bell?
1
@bkjeong4302 Is that really a fair match? The Americans were Green as grass in experience.
1
@darrellsmith4204 You need to watch CSPAN more..... Few crystal ball users in office.
1
@Vespuchian How else do you move short range fighters over a Ocean?
1
@arkhaan7066 Your still building a over sized odd gun sized Cruiser or a under gunned and protected Battleship. So you have HMS Hood as a model if you dislike the Graf Spee comparison.
1
@bkjeong4302 Still, what is the point of a 10" Cruiser?
1
@Vespuchian The point is, there is no flat answer to the question. A voyage could take hours or Around the globe.
1
@ardenelenduil2334 You could take a tanker Hull. Do the same thing. Have a 500 tubes. And build it for less than your Iowa conversion.
1
@budmeister Sorry, I have no "camment" to delete. 😷
1
@budmeister You do realize that you punched me first? Turning the other cheek leads to a sore jaw and lost glasses in my experience. 😐 I have no desire to be a dick about your issues or anyone else's. Matter settled. Moving on....😷
1
The planes did the work.😐
1
Ron Lewenberg Ship naming has neither requirements for the honor.
1
@DanielBrown-sn9op Not true. FDR had a Midway class CV named for him.
1
It's a 5 minute guide. It's a noteworthy ship. Trained the early pioneers of Naval Aviation. ....... What more are we missing? The highlights of the history were covered.
1
Broadly? A armed Naval vessel, intended for combat operations.
1
Wrong channel....
1
Actually, she was sunk doing a ferry mission for the US Army. Moving a P-40 fighter Squadron to Java. The reason no carriers were at Pearl Harbor were due to similar Ferry missions to Wake Island and Midway. By this time, The Langley was a Seaplane tender.
1
She was being used to ferry USAAF P-40's. Sadly never delivered to Java.
