@erict7840 That is a load of crap and 100% false. You owe the man apologies.

@LuisRamos-ou8zb In fact the event was filmed live. It was made into a Navy training film on Damage Control shown to every recruit in training. And your basically correct. While launching a Alpha strke From Yankee Station, a Zuni rocket on a F-4B fired accidently. It crossed the deck into the Parked A-4's of VA-46. LT. McCain's drop tank was ruptured by the rocket. The fuel then ignited and started a fire among the 3 A-4's. He climbed out of the jet, seconds before his bomb load cooked off. That is fact and official.

@derekhenschel3191 The design used 8 Nuclear reactors! The later Nimitz class uses 2. Reason enough to only build one......😎

@Arthion the Navy had enough 8" cruiser s in active service; the Alaskas we're not needed. The Des Moines and Baltimores worked well and didn't have a odd ball main gun to supply. Most critical in the post war period, the Alaskas lacked torpedo protection. And the Soviet sub threat was growing.

He meant the use of a large CV for ASW. That was unusual. Prior to this, CVE or CVL's were used.

@Vanilla0729 Because it is still US property. The rest is self explanatory.....

@strub6732 Quality did vary by ship. All had shakedowns and work ups prior to deployment. That gave time for green crews to learn and gel.
