@vincenthopkins6345 His prior history gave him political cover. You could say the same about Bernard Montgomery or George Patton.

@Drachinifel The French had the better solution. The F-8 Crusader. Performance and fits carriers of that size.

@edwarddunne2758 not really. While you see the ships as being useful, the aircraft that have to use them have moved on. You're going to be limited in the size of aircraft capable of operating from an Essex. You're limited to using aircraft the size of the A7 and F 8 Crusader and A4.

@RUSSIAN_SHRILL it would have made no difference. You can't destroy a mountain.

@Drachinifel I'm sure we could keep upgrading it just the same way people have upgraded the F4 Phantom over and over again. The French Navy kept using them well into the 2000s. By then, perhaps they would be using the Rafale?

@ariancontreras4358 nope....

@kemarisite it always helps to have friends in high places. He had the name recognition and past glory to rely on as cover. Special treatment for special people.

@ariancontreras4358 by that time, you have a diminishing return in usefulness. Going to a caliber bigger, is not going to improve AA performance much.

Free Speech are you familiar with the phrase,"guns versus butter?" 🤔 The Cold War as we knew it as a threat, disappeared. The need to protect colonial empire as it was in Queen Victoria's Day was gone. The citizens as well as the politicians value national health Care far more than the ability of destroyers to do anti-submarine warfare. You're talking about expenses & expenditures for little visible return on investment to the public. Your average Britain cannot eat a helicopter. The Royal Navy is not alone in the lack of defense spending. As current events have shown, most of Europe has taken the same approach.

@swansinatorjr3453 I'm 80% sure he has covered Scapa Flow in the last 3 years.

@Clonetrooper17 seems a little bit inefficient to build a factory just to supply one ship. Easier just to buy surplus ammo from Italy.

@RedXlV I wouldn't put that much stake into Halsey. Much lesser flag officers suffered that fate without the morale collapsing.
1
@johnortmann3098 I'm sitting here trying to picture the Nebraska Navy? 🤔
1
@RedXlV I think you're just reaffirming my previous comment?
1
@stevevalley7835 that doesn't exactly equate to actually hitting anything however.
1
@Valorius you missed the overwhelming point, that they don't fit on a ship that size.
1
@Valorius they don't fit the lifts, they don't fit the hangers and very short to land on.
1
@Valorius a Malta is not a Nimitz.
1
@genesis-1182 it doesn't matter how many ships they have. By that time they have no oil, without oil the ship stay at anchor.
1
@norahc. it's a bit similar to how sniper scopes do range finding. The periscope is using gradations of a known value of meters or yards. All submarines have a book of ship silhouettes of known vessels based on their registry. Based on that information you can estimate how large a vessel is and its distance.

@kibecawest9867 Jimmy Dean's Pt-109 or Johnny Horton's various tunes beat bad Euro Metal noise...🙄

@MrNikolai07 Not much different from helicopter crews today. They tend to stay with their department when on duty. In the Wardroom, kind apart from the other officers. Much like a ships doctor.
