@seth1422 The Ranger & Wasp did have limited operations in the Eastern Atlantic and Med. And survived.

@seth1422 "Wildcat vs. ME109F" The Wildcat , although faster and more maneuverable than the sea hurricane, it was still some 60 mph slower than the German fighter. The lower the altitude the less the odds favored the me-109 f. The Wildcat also had a heavier punch to deliver. Verdict: as a dog Fighter the Wildcat was superior to the me-109 f, but the initiative always lay with the German because of superior performance. At low altitudes the me-109 had the edge over the Wildcat but not by much. "Wildcat vs. ME 110" The me 110 C, with his inferior performance with find it difficult to escape the wildcats' attentions. A beam or flat astern attack by the powerfully armed Wildcat was likely to meet with success, the German forced to rely on the rear Gunner for survival. Verdict: the me-110 C would be unlikely to survive an encounter with a wildcat, and only a lucky hit could stop the latter."- from "Duels in the Sky" by, Captain Eric Brown, RN page 66. So I give the USN a fair chance. In UK hands, they fared well vs. Both German and Italian aircraft. And did as well if better then Sea Hurricanes or Fulmar Squadrons.

@seth1422 On the other hand.... The Yorktown had radar and the F4F fighters as a defense CAP. Yorktown also has better AA defenses.

@DawnOfTheDead991 Dagger's point remains. As for monplanes? The Bristol Beaufort did no better than the Sowrdfish in the same battle.

@DawnOfTheDead991 All torpedo planes are handicapped by the limits of the weapon. They all need to fly low, slow and straight on a attack run. The Barracuda and Albacore did not do much better.

Wrong thought process. Instead, think of everything pre Essex as experiments and developments. As we built more, the lessons were learned and adjusted for.
