  4. Hmmmm.... while there were reasons to fight. The sinking of the USS PANAY in 1937 or the sinking of USS Ruben James just weeks from Pearl Harbor as examples. I doubt we were that close to war. We still had a strong & Anti War base. We lacked the men and arms till well into 1943.

  6. To save money and hulls underconstruction. Also the carrier is not the main weapon system yet. Not everybody had Billy Mitchells faith in aviation over sea power.

  7.  @sarjim4381  To add to the What if... "How does the battle go if USS Langley is not sunk on Feb. 27th?" A full Squadron of P-40's & pilots were lost. They could have balanced the airpower situation.

  13. Question 1? Major design issue. Ship design is a ballance of speed, weapons, handling, space. To add a fouth turret means more displacement, less freeboard, more length..... and the cons go on. All just to shoot some more? If your running away, add speed over more guns.
