You miss read the history. Most of the losses were by dumb bombs. Not missiles. And the AA defense systems were designed for a different threat type.

Again, faulty thinking. Why we have a Montana fan club today is a mystery? The idea your going increase speed by gimmicks is a dead end. The idea of replacing the guns for missiles is another bad idea. There are cruisers for AA defense.

@Aerospace_Gaming You ditch and wait for pickup by Escort ships or Subs assign to "Lifeguard " duty. Seaplanes from the Battleships and Cruisers may also do Search and Rescue. In the Battle of Midway, nearly the entire Air wing of the USS Hornet was shot down, or ditched at sea. If other Carriers are available? You land there.

There is no Cold War surface threat needing a Battleship force.
2
It was given a carrier trial and rejected.
2
You're On this fan club? 🙄 Summer cruises? You can do training on numerous ships alot cheaper.
2
@sarjim4381 If teaching is the goal, a smaller ship would be better. There were a ton of DE, SC & PC's left over. Enough to attach one to every NROTC unit. Crews would learn each division in rotation.

Based on what?
1
@LikeUntoBuddha The term is SAG. Surface Action Group. The Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles were a compliment to the guns. And sorry, The Montana's size and speed equals a Sub Captain's dream.

@LikeUntoBuddha Compared to to other ships of the era.

@LikeUntoBuddha Russia

Yes. They are too big.
1
@bradmiller2329 Those are Anti ship and Cruise missiles. And had separate launchers.
1
Oh, lord......Magical 1950's Nuclear plants? 🙄
1
chris younts This disscusion has left all reality.
1
@toddwebb7521 You can't drop a Nuclear reactor into a ship like a LS Chevy V8...... It also would would be competing for money with the Polaris SSBN, Enterprise CVN, and a ton of other Defense programs.
1
5.25 inch guns.
1
No, as early as 1950 the BB's were not operating with the carriers. They lost a escort role very early.
1
@csours Yes, There were DD'S with Aircraft. Subs as well.
1
@bkjeong4302 Seems the Montana fan club is online? 🙄
1
@slycat6586 Yes, there were a number of VC's awards in both wars.
1
@lolfunacount Tonnage vs. crew is not a good measure. Most merchant ships have crews under 30.
1
@1SKIALI Yes. PT boats carried depth charges for just the same purpose. Stop pursuing DD's.
1
@matthorn9209 The cancellation of all of the above makes more sense. The Uboat was what was needed. Not surface ships.
1
@crispico4727 US Civil war...😐
1
@Dylan Raymond Yes. Here are some in action. https://youtu.be/eZt7PAaTjns

@donaldrobertson117 The UK was into downsizing and giving ships away. The Empire days were over. Look at the RN today. It's smaller than 1982.
1
Government does not work that way.
1
Why stop there? Let's make it fly.....😏
1
1. It was not a Battleship. 2. The ship was greatly damaged, not sunk...
1
Nothing. The reason for their existence was sunk already or stuck in port.
