@sundiver137 Vs. billions on the Zumwalt class, it was a bargain.

@TEHSTONEDPUMPKIN That makes no sense The Ticos were Air Defense ships. The Iowas were never intended for that mission. They were pure Surface Action ships to counter the Soviet Kirov class battlecrusiers. We needed a ship killer and Naval Gunfire platform. The Aegis ships are not apples to apples.

Admiral Kimmel might disagree. And Halsey should have face a court, but got a 5th star instead.

chris younts You're pushing into the ranting zone. And the Iowa reactivation was a good move strategically and economically.
6
design decision and treaty limits on size.
5
@Easy-Eight That is a risk on a Destroyer. Yet they all have them. Safety was far from a design consideration.

@johnbuchman4854 Throw another two names in the mix. Marc Mitscher & his questionable action report at Midway. And Standhope Ring. CAG of the Hornet at Midway. Who wasted a entire Air group and near cost us the battle.
2
@Billy_Annizarry You don't send big ships in narrow waters with no air cover.

"Mission of the Shark" Good film about the sinking. https://youtu.be/AolsS_ZisAA

@ibbi32 Johnny Horton rules.....😷

@kemarisite USN Black Cat PBY's would beg to differ......
1
chris younts No..... This a Saturday ship history. Not a bio on the last Captain or even about the sinking.

@kemarisite To be fair, Admiral Crutchley R.A.N. & Kelly Turner USN. Were senior.

@kemarisite People train a lifetime to fight a a battle. He got caught pants down and half sleep. Not the best mindset to make decisions.😴

@prussianhill There seems to be a huge Kriegsmarine fan Club? This Surface fleet still lacks sea access. Fuel, men, air cover, logistics ships and escorts. They are not Surface Raiders and are too weak to beat the Home fleet. So what is the point? Build up to do what?🤔
1
@kemarisite Still a threat that could damage them just long enough to bring Hell come dawn....😏
1
@thedevilinthecircuit1414 🤷♂️😏 Naval Architecture like building Architecture has style periods and technology changes. That turret design just ran its course.

@a_friendly_alien4289 Depends upon what you need to upgrade and the cost? Case in point? Use Current Events. the Burnt USS Bonhome Richard in San Diego. Is it worth throwing money at? Is reactivation of a ship in Mothballs even worth it?

@kemarisite Even the Chicago Cubs got lucky and won a World Series...So could a PBY.

@ditzydoo4378 Lifeguard subs were in places attacks were to be going on. The Indy was going to the rear area.
1
@prussianhill You're massing of force changes little. They lack the logistics to support a force at sea. You lack a Destroyer force to screen your force. They have limited sea access to do anything in the Atlantic. They lack the fuel and manpower to move them. And with code breaking, their movements are predictable. As for a mass raid? Not needed. As long as they are stuck in port in Germany, the Baltic or in Norway they are neutrallized.
1
@prussianhill Destruction is not really needed. Same idea as the Pacific Island hopping campaign. Bypass strong points like Rabul. You use mines and Subs to contain the enemy. As long as they are out the fight; there is nothing gained trying to waste resources sinking them. They will wither on the vine like the IJN.

@adamwolson631 Ditching Torpedoes was a start. Smaller masts was another.
1
@benconway9010 The Pennsylvania Class was done already.
1
@Easy-Eight In this case the doctrine was opposite other major navies. A tool they needed and lacked. Deleting them for safety sounds as unbelievable as deleting the scout planes. The sea planes, fuel and weapons were more likely to get hit as torpedoes.
1
@seanmac1793 Americans make mistakes. Slavery, Prohibition, the designated hitter, New Coke and not putting Torpedoes on Crusiers.😷🤷♂️
