@HM2SGT Minor dissagrement in the ability to project sea power. The Iowa class was rebuilt a reactivated for that ability. They're fast, long endurance, armored platforms. They were a direct counter to Soviet Cruiser units like the Kirov class. The capability of the BB is still needed today.

Last week the wreckage of the Nevada was located.

Why? History is rarely on the minds of people making decisions. Ships are costly to maintain. World War II had produced an oversupply of warships. Nevada, was already obsolete when War began. She served a useful purpose as a nuc target.

Not exactly.... The US has used them in a limited role well into the Gulf War in 1991.

@HM2SGT Oh, those ships like Nevada? Of course...... The Iowas were a exception to that rule. Most of their life span was in Mothballs. So the machinery Actually had little mileage on them. The Regan era refits bought all four to standard tech of the time and added a cruise missile punch. R&D on the guns never stopped and long range GPS guided rounds can extend the range of the main and secondary guns 50 miles plus. And unlike a sub or DDG, they have no fear of return fire. Even today the USN lacks a true Naval gunfire support system. The DDG 1000 program has been a total fail in that regard.

@solus48 Exactly. Look at the Royal Navy. After 400 years, what is there to see? Not much.
