It's a very good but very complex question. As notable and historic as many of these ships are. The desire for preservation was not as high in the mid 50s some 10 years after the war. Also ship museums are very expensive items to maintain. And particularly not well visited ones. They're not exactly Disney theme parks. Almost all of the major museums have funding issues as well as maintenance issues. Also a battleship is a pretty sizable piece of real estate to park any place.

@andrewboyle3770 and I suppose you're bringing this all up because of some great interest in history and not because you have a political axe to grind? Which is about the only reason people bring up the topic.

@FatGuyInaTruck doesn't change the point however. Time moves on and memories fade. Locally Veterans Day is not even a school holiday anymore.
