To be honest, production of the Garand was slow. Neither the Marine Corps or USN were equipped with them pre-war.

@hhale I don't disagree. However you have to look at it in context of the period. That was supposed to be the war that end all wars. The next 20 years were spent on folks pushing neutrality and reduce defense spending. Not to mention the Great Depression.

@TheHistoryGuyChannel I believe the correct term should be mounted infantry for events in Afghanistan. But everyone seems to think a guy on a horse equals Calvary.

@hhale weapons exports were at best small pre-1941. And non-interventionism was a prevailing sentiment. Full economic recovery really didn't happen until wartime industry came into play. The same sentiments and defense policies could be said by both the Americans and the allies pre-1939.

@billd.iniowa2263 actually I would make a case for the mountain bike over the mule. An experiments have been made with robots for load carrying. No need for water or feed.
