The Egyptians are free to open their border and let them all in. But, they never do....

@Srfs777 where do you get the idea that Israel wishes settlements? There is zero desire to do something like that.

@Slay_No_More on the contrary, they have been giving back land won since 1973.

Very good answer. There's a reason why most goods do not come on a FedEx plane. They come on cargo ships. That's where the volume is.

Not only is armor an issue. Experiences in Afghanistan show that rifle combat is no longer a short range close jungle / Urban combat thing. The ability to reach out and touch someone beyond 300 m has become necessary.

That's really not how we're fighting Wars anymore. We don't need Mass numbers of rifleman. And the skills of Americans in shooting is suspect at best at any large scale. We need numbers of quality people. rather than mass quantities. And we need to retain trained people. Not recycling people every 2 or 3 years to do basics.

Using the military as some sort of social program is never a good idea. Where does the UK have a real manpower need for a huge Army. And trying to turn a society into Sparta, is not exactly a great goal. The goal should always be quality over quantity. The United Kingdom does need to do better in that regard and in spending.

@warweasel2832 that just sounds like a guy trying to justify his job? The idea that there is any sort of practical plan of resettling Gazza is just not there.

Using the military is some sort of social mine warping experiment is a bad one. The United States is not Sparta. Nor do we wish it to be. From an economic standpoint, we really do not need a massive amount of manpower on our account books. With a debt of 33 trillion and growing. We need quality, over quantity. And not necessarily huge number of Low skilled troops. South Korea and Israel have very different situations.
