@redf7209 generally ships of this type have one rudder and one propeller. Attempts to drop anchor, failed to stop the ship.

Most cargo ships only have one engine.

@ScienceChap physics is a bitch..... It's kind of hard to stop that whole, Force equals mass times acceleration thing. 🙇🏽♂️

As in Francis Scott Key. The whole writer of "The Star-Spangled banner...." Fort McHenry is in Baltimore harbor.

@mspicer3262 well it's pretty key as a bridge now. It has effectively shut off the Port of Baltimore. And 695 was part of the beltway system around the south end of the city to the airport. Now the i-95 tunnels will have to handle the bulk of traffic.

@dukecraig2402 interstate 695 is a four-lane concrete deck.

@reecedrystek2992 you're not putting brakes on the ship with a tug that is not in position. You are not suggesting they go in front of the bow are you?
2
@davidty2006 I wouldn't exactly call it a flimsy bridge? It's a rather massive amount of kinetic Force being applied to a main support structure. Once that fails, it's just like Dominoes falling.

That will be part of the investigation. Think of this like a plane crash. They will have to reconstruct, interview and collect information.

@dukecraig2402 4 Lanes. It's the main road for interstate 695. Also a major travel route to BWI airport. I believe the road deck is concrete?

I'm sorry if taking things in a dispassionate view bothers you? It's better to communicate facts rather than getting emotional. An estimates on loss of life are just a guess at this point. Had it been midday on a Tuesday ,it would have been a lot worse. Interstate 695 is a major route going past BWI airport.

Good clue.🕵🏻♂️

There's only so much you can do in a few minutes at 1:00 in the morning. Even the construction crew did not have time to clear the bridge.

AI technology is not quite a thing in commercial shipping. You still need to have people to do various functions.

@palehorseman8386 the US Navy is experimenting with Unmanned ships. That's fine in the open ocean. But you still need people for tasks like piloting out of a harbor and handling all the deck and engineering systems.
