@markalbert9011 that is flat out false. There are documented and well known cases.

@RichardChappell1 that's not the discussion. The claim is that it's never happened. And that is completely false.
29
@ChuckHuffmaster Even the A-10 does not primarily rely on a gun. Most of the dirty work is done by things like Mavericks and Hellfires. The gun gets a lot of hype however. And most of the targets don't really need a 30 mm.
10
It was invented with the idea that we would not have enough tanks. Helicopter gunships were invented for the same role. You see very little use of either in Ukraine. And when you do, it's in a standoff roll. The A-10 doesn't do anything more than the Sukhoi 25 does.
3
@Canbilly2 actually there's a very noteworthy incident during the Gulf War. British forces still talk about it today.
2
@ChuckHuffmaster first of all, the gun is not a primary weapon for armor or light vehicles. And for most light vehicles, a 20 mm on most aircraft will suffice. Everything from a Harrier to a Super Hornet has one.
2
You Fanboys just don't give up do you? They've already rejected your request. And the su-25 has been decimated. As have the helicopter gunships. Which is why this is primarily a drone War.
1
@Trashmarksman actually, you need technicians lot more than Pilots. Airplanes don't fly without people to maintain them. And they take just as much training.
1
@Grimshak81 Fixing Avionics and jet engine s; is a bit more complex than fixing a Volvo station wagon. Teaching a transcript how to hang a bomb on a rack or do a refueling; is one thing. You're not picking up some guy off the block in Stockholm; and having him do programming on a flight computer after a few Zoom calls. And at last check, Ukraine has no Gripens. F-16s and Mirage 2000 are on the way.
1
First of all this is no longer a jet fighter War. It's a drone War. It's taking time to get f-16s transferred and people trained and support. Your F-18 also has two engines to maintain. And maintainers are more important than Pilots right now. Jets are not the battlefield Game Changer in Ukraine.
1
Wars are not won by rifles. An individual cost are negligible. Production contracts are based on support and other factors. Not just the price of individual arms.
1
People who can't shoot always complain about triggers.
1
@_droid in general, most people in the military are not better than average. As far as complexity? There is no great advantage having a M4 over a Tavor, FAMAS, AUG. Or more better reliability. Their users have made them work.
1
This is a dead argument. The A-10 doesn't do anything more than the Sukhoi 25 does. No one is flying over the battlefield with jets or helicopters right now. There are surface to are missiles all over the place. This is a drone War now. This is an artillery War. And everyone knows where the air bases are.
1
It's a drone universe. Is there a reason why the Russians have already lost 300 plus airplanes.
1
@wcooper0077 False....
1
@wcooper0077 this is a war about lobbying endless artillery shells and playing with drones now. The air war is a sideshow. Over 300 plus aircraft destroyed has shown primary threat is anti-aircraft fire and surface area missiles. And the bases are all subject to being hit. Primarily all this is doing, is getting rid of surplus f-16s for nations that are upgrading to F-35.
1
Ukraine can barely keep replacing its losses. They cannot hold any ground. And they are running out of people to draft.
1
@hgv1883 lot of other aircraft do close air support. The Marines get by just fine without one.
1
Blank checks and blank Visa cards do not exist.💳
1
Its 2 years into the war. No one is flying planes over the combat zone. The Russians have already lost over 300 aircraft already. You don't see anybody in gunships either. It is a battlefield dominated by surface-to-air missiles. This is why drones have become the de facto tool of choice.
