  2. I think the change in California minimum wage has a lot more to do with it. You can't pay people $20 an hour to sell a hamburger. Which is why Pizza Hut laid off all their delivery drivers.

  7.  @Dabshanks  There are not singular issues leading to business decisions. And the cost of Labor is a far more crucial issue. A restaurant can deal with crime. Labor cost exceeding that of the products being sold, is a non-starter....

  8.  @Lok-TM  it's a contributing factor. But not the sole Factor. A restaurant can work in crime-filled area. Labor cost exceeding that of the products being sold is a death blow. You can lock up everybody you wish. No one's buying a $25 hamburger.

  10.  @LA_HA  I think it's got a lot more to do with the minimum wage. The same reason Pizza Hut got rid of all delivery people in CA. If it was an issue of security? The restaurant can take measures for that. To take your business completely out? Is more, no longer profitable. No one is paying $25 for a burger in Oakland. Unless In-N-Out Burger has a large number of robberies?

  13.  @rachele9566  well, how much are you willing to pay for a hamburger ? Because the labor cost of those locations is not changing. And crime doesn't magically stop at a county line.
