  1. ​ @crewcut442 the people with these Tugboat theories are screwed up. You don't need tugboats in the situation where the ship is already in the shipping channel. And they are not going to slow it down once it's underway.

  2.  @jf7243  there's been plenty of commentary on this. It's not particularly practical to try and retrofit every bridge. There is actually more of a worry about trucks running into Bridges than ships. It's an infrastructure job as big as replacing all the water mains in a city. You can only replace so many miles per year. And what about the other Bridge work that needs to be done? That's money not going to deck repair or structural repair.

  3. ​ @johngibson3837 actually, Aviation gasoline is a high octane gasoline for aircraft. Jet fuel is generally a form of kerosene.

  5. You are correct. Most ship scrapping is done overseas. US Navy ships however are scrapped down in Texas.

  11. No one wants to pay Americans. That's why most Merchant fleets are made up of folks from the Philippines And India. With officers from places like Eastern Europe. The US Merchant Marine is still in place. That is mainly dealing with Coastal shipping and shipping between US territories.

  12. Very little commercial shipbuilding is done in the United States anymore. The handful shipyards are mostly dedicated to Department of Defense work. No one's building cruise ships in America for example. The labor cost and environmental regulations don't make it reasonable anymore. Same thing has happened to the UK shipbuilding industry. Nor do we have the number of Steel plants anymore.

  13. The horn would be meaningless. It's 1:00 in the morning on a mile long plus Bridge. With marine traffic going by all the time. You can't even see a ship from the middle of the bridge by the time it was there.

  15. That's not how tugs work. You want tugs to babysit every single ship for how far? All the way down the Chesapeake Bay? The ship is in the channel and no longer requires assistance. And while you're babysitting that one ship, You delay the next one coming or going.

  22. You're going to use other methods to break up concrete. And there are environmental regulations to the Marine industry just like there is to the Auto industry. Older ships are being phased out because they do not meet those regs. Just like you don't see cars using lead gas anymore.

  23. We're not in trouble. We are changing economic basis away from heavy industry. People are not buying American cars, ships or textiles. They want American airplanes, weapons, Pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, and entertainment.

  37. Not really. Outside of military use, nuclear power for commercial shipping is a failure. It costs too much. Requires very specialized personnel. And you have some Nations that still have restrictions on nuclear-powered ships in their ports. Only stuff like Russian icebreakers make any sense.

  38. American labor costs and environmental regulations have made it no longer cost-effective. Not to mention retirement of skilled labor. The majority of the Yards remaining are dedicated to Defense work.

We are not turning the clock back on heavy industry. That's not where the United States is going. The World wants very specialized things from the United States. They want Boeing airliners not tankers. They want f-35s, not an American built container vessel. They want American Pharmaceuticals and agriculture. American entertainment and intellectual property. We are not building TV sets or washing machines anymore.
