There's not enough room on the ship or the hangers to carry all those planes. Thus they had to have the RAF planes on deck. That's why there's no CAP.

@bradleydavies4781 there was a dispute on the ship That was supposed to lead to a court-martial. The captain requested to return early.

@SvenTviking To be honest, they probably weren't expecting a surface threat. But rather u-boats. So the whole thing about having a combat Air Patrol probably wouldn't have happened anyway.

@tvgerbil1984 On the contrary, his decks were full of recovered RAF aircraft. These land-based aircraft for being taken back home.

@tvgerbil1984 there's also a question of whether or not you have to turn into the wind and position of the enemy versus the wind? Would Swordfish stop them?🤷🏽‍♂️ it's a good history "what if?"
