Only the larger ships had Marine contingents...

Yes and no. Marine Detachments were only assigned to larger ships. Ships destroyers and smaller did not have them.

Pretty much during Vietnam. We had to send teams to inspect and search boat traffic offshore and in the rivers. It also came about again during the gulf conflicts needing to enforce UN sanctions. You also see them involved in both anti-piracy and anti-drug operations.

Oh Lord, no training that extensive in land combat.

Not exactly. We're not talking about boarding and searching ships. This will be more like say, sending a landing party into Haiti or the Dominican Republic back in the day.

No, the term you're looking at is a landing party. A classic example would be say trouble at a US Embassy and you'd have to land bluejacket's ashore to reinforce. The most notable type of that work was the so-called Boxer Rebellion in China. When sailors and Marines of various Nations had to secure foreign legations for 88 days till a relief party could reach them.

Ship boarding is not a typical thing anymore. And you have a much larger Marine Corps.

As a general rule of thumb? Most of that stuff stays in the arms Locker.
