Sorry, I beg to differ. Mr Brady is correct. U.S.N.S does not refer to non-commissioned. But the ships are not commissioned as United States ships.

While ships don't use headlights, would it not be beneficial to have access to night vision or thermal vision technology? I'm thinking of situations such as the collision between US Navy vessels in commercial ships out in the Pacific two or three years ago. Also commercial ships have their Bridges located very far aft. It would seem prudent to have some sort of forward-looking thermal or night vision camera up forward when your vision is blocked by tons of containers.
