  1. I think it really depends on the rigour with which you use logs. A RDBMs is a log-based system. They are implemented by keeping and processing a "Transaction Log" of changes that modify the data, so as long as you collected ALL of the significant events, you can accurately replay a complete picture. We did a similar things, in a totally different way, at LMAX building one of the world's highest performance financial exchanges. So Logs aren't necessarily a poor tool, but we often don't use them very well.
