  2. gladify, a functioning democracy relies on a large number of capable leaders. Authoritarian leaders do their utmost to prevent potential competitors from rising to the fore. That's why presidents-for-life are incompatible with democracy.

  3. gladify, how would you explain the all-too-apparent voter backlash that has swept established parties and leaders from power, replacing them with new ones?
