You're a bit behind the times. 105 years, to be exact.

@Abiodun92 That's what Putin thought of Ukraine, too. Then he pulled Yanukovych's strings too hard.

@D R That's what renewable energy is for. Maybe you, too, should give it a try? Extreme weather events have been relative easy on Europe.

@D R My electricity comes from a hydroelectric plant and an offshore wind farm. I make it a point to only buy green electricity. The price per kWh is based on Nordpool, an electricity exchange, that doesn't distinguish between energy types. According to you, my energy supplier is operating at a loss, yet it's posting record profits (and soon, paying windfall taxes because of it).
1
@D R But I'm not living in Norway. Didn't you understand the bit about the windfall tax? The proceeds go toward compensating consumers with a high electricity bill. I don't qualify, since my last monthly bill was a measly 22€. District heating. We haven't imported Russian oil or gas since June last year, so what trade deficit? It's hilarious what little else Russia exported. Gherkins and candy -- the latter, surprisingly, US brands. It took half an hour for supermarkets to clear their shelves. Timber. It's not like we haven't got trees. It's just that Russian timber was cheaper because they can't be bothered with sustainable forestry.

@D R In our case, renewables account for more than 50% already. Russia runs a trade surplus because it's still exporting oil and gas (at a much-reduced price, that is) after it drastically cut imports -- or had them cut for it. Running a surplus is nice, but less so if your people struggle to find -- or afford -- basic necessities. True, some of my fellow Europeans did grow dependent of Russian energy, but not us. It's not a personal story, but a national one. If the Germans, with their misplaced trust in Russia, dug themselves a hole, I can't help but feel a bit of Schadenfreude. They'll live and learn.

It must be a source of consolation to Pu Tin, the newly-appointed regional governor of China's northernmost province, Ruxia.

@realjoyjinnaya Have some copium. Take a deep breath.
1
@realjoyjinnaya You just go and surrender to China. Get it over with.

With all due respect to Ms. Marin, she just sealed the deal. The people had already decided. In the prevailing atmosphere, it would've been political suicide to act otherwise. Her greatest achievement was convincing her peacenik fellow party members that the game was lost.

@DarkLordofTheSith_DarthVader Ireland, a true example of neutrality? The truth is, Ireland hides behind the UK's skirts. Whenever Russian warplanes enter Irish-controlled airspace, it's British fighters that scramble to escort them out. Embarrassing! My native Holland was a true example of neutrality and disarmament. Then WW2 happened.
1
Yeah, imagine that. The Cold War was over, NATO had an existential crisis, and then Putin gave it a new lease of life. How stupid can you be?
1
You're straining your coping mechanism. You'll need it in working order.

Maybe PM Modi can negotiate a circular deal where Russia gets a piece of China, China gets a piece of India (Ladakh?) and India gets a pat on the back for being such a good sport. After all, Putin needs more Lebensraum and Ukraine is proving too troublesome, India is keen to appease all and sundry, and China is wedged in between the two and can't appear to lose territory in the deal. They should give me the Nobel Peace Prize!
