+Zafar Makhmudov I guess our definition of a strong and stable economy is completely at odds with that of anyone who actually knows anything about the topic. Russia has been in a downward spiral ever since the oil price tanked. Despite bombastic claims to the contrary, Russia has made little or no progress in diversifying its economy. Russia's dependence on oil and gas is as big as ever. No, Putin stands weak and in order to hide the sad state of affairs, he constantly needs to up his sabre-rattling so that it won't occur to you fanboys to blame him for Russia's misfortunes. But in the end, economic realities will do him in. The question is only how big the implosion will be this time.

Zafar Makhmudov The sanctions against aren't helping, but it's the low oil price that is slowly but surely hollowing out the Russian economy. The once-mighty Reserve Fund has kept things ticking over, but it's fast becoming depleted -- in 2017, by the finance ministry's own admission. Next, they'll have to dip into pension funds next to cover the budget shortfalls. I wonder what the already-struggling beneficiaries will think of their meagre pensions being squandered on Putin's military adventurism in Ukraine and Syria. So jealous, not a bit. Sorry to disappoint you further, but I have no part in US military adventurism either.
