frequency008 Russkies are so predictable. Every accusation that gets levelled against them, they immediately hurl back. Who's going to break it to them that it doesn't work?

Mike Evans Yanukovych's power base fell apart. Even his own political party deserted him, not to mention the oligarchs who bankrolled his regime. His ouster may not have been pretty, but his position was completely untenable. Had he cared for his people, he would've resigned long ago. Anyhow, I don't think your hero is well pleased at Putin tearing his country apart. If the Ukrainians didn't all hate Yanukovych before, they do now.

LastGreen You're making it appear like the EU was somehow planning to elope with Ukraine, leaving Russia at the altar. No one in the EU wanted Ukraine to join outright -- the state they're in is like Greece times hundred. To meet the entry requirements, Ukraine would need to improve on so many levels that we're easily talking a decade of reforms. As a matter of fact, Russia makes a better candidate, at least on paper. The real question is if EU membership solves Ukraine's problems. Maybe the answer is an arrangement where they join both EU and CIS free trade areas.
