@memofromessex I wonder. Argentina's air forces in particular were severely curtailed by a US arms embargo. Otherwise, Argentina might have dealt such crippling damage to the British invasion fleet that it would've had to withdraw and call the whole thing off.

@Liberty-Jamie The US did, too, support the UK despite severe US doubts about the outcome. Vitally even, with fuel, intelligence and ammunition.

The UK would do well to halve its cost as well. Garrisoning the islands and maintaining an air base there don't come cheap. Keeping colonies is a burden nowadays.
2
Not only that, Brexit Britain managed to drift away from Europe, with some pretending it's no longer part of the European continent. Annoyingly, it's still there, exactly where it was before.

@Zurvan101 Hongkongers -- real ones, that is -- have developed a distinct identity of their own. The same goes for the Taiwanese. And the Singaporean Chinese.

@Liberty-Jamie Supplying weapons, like the game-changing AIM-9L Sidewinder, and allowing access to critical assets, such as the US fuel stores on Ascension island, is support all right. Without the fuel, there wouldn't have been any Black Buck missions, which would've meant more ground attack sorties and supplies reaching the Argentine forces defending the Falklands. How did you have Canada? Do you still have Canada? I'm curious.
1
@Liberty-Jamie No, why? Me thinks Canada and the UK aren't joined at the hip any longer. And British monarchs can't declare war on behalf of their (nominal) subjects. Interestingly, the UK couldn't invoke NATO's Article 5 either, because NATO's Article 6 specifies that the attack needs to take place north of the Tropic of Cancer. The Falklands are way south. It looks like someone had the presence of mind to prevent British colonial messes from sparking a wider conflict.
1
@Liberty-Jamie Duh, British monarchs are figureheads in every sense of the word. UK colonies? 'Overseas territories' you mean. They're itsy-bitsy islands spread all over the world. They can't support themselves, much less each other. More trouble than they're worth. The Falkland Islands are a case in point.

@AndrewStead-wv4po Argentine air power was superior in quantity, but not in quality. The Argentinians struggled to bring their aircraft to bear because of range limitations. The RN had a distinct advantage in the all-aspect AIM-9L Sidewinder. The US had to speed-deliver more. The French, too, helped Britain deal with French-made aircraft and missiles in Argentina's inventory. Had the French supplied more Exocets, the UK would've faced doom.

I guess it's a matter of choosing between poor and poorerer.

You needn't throw your toys out of the pram. Milei is a populist. He needs to pander to the crowd.
1
He's playing with toy soldiers and planes, actually. Real ones are in short supply.
1
@Zurvan101 Admit it, you're selective in your moral outrage. Your ethnicity excuse doesn't cut it.
1
@Zurvan101 I'm not taking the Argentinians' side. You trivialised the plight of the Hongkongers, and by extension, that of the Taiwanese. Communist China supposedly has "ethnic" rights to subjugate both.
1
@Zurvan101 You make poor arguments and you don't stand by them. Noted.
