Lucas Colley In one word, USA. Finns have deep-seated misgivings about superpowers on account of the Cold War. While the main reason was the USSR, the US is still considered part of the problem. It didn't help that the US foolishly embarked on the Iraq War, which truth be told wasn't a NATO operation, but with the USA being the single biggest contributor to NATO, some of the blame stuck nonetheless. The irony is that without the Iraq War, Finland probably would've been a NATO member already. Who knows, maybe even Russia would have.

Mäk Kylis But more often than not, Russia helping its neighbours leads to these countries having to endure annexation and/or occupation. Ukraine is only the latest example.

The Jumbex You don't seem to understand the very concept of a trade block. The EU as a whole is obligated to act if Russia were to single out one member for sanctions. Russia is more dependent on us buying their gas than we are on them selling it to us. Finnish power stations are purposely designed to burn both coal and gas. Unlike citizens of many Central and Western European countries, we won't go cold if Russia were to cut gas deliveries.

GNU/LINUX It's smug to think the Alaskans, Canadians and Norwegians can't deal with conditions as harsh ours. Moreover, I had the pleasure of teaching orienteering to Dutch Marines. In a matter of days, they reached a proficiency that the average Finnish conscript struggles to attain in 6 months.

Mäk Kylis You don't seem to appreciate that Russia targeting Finland with trade sanctions would drag the whole EU into the dispute. The EU would not only impose counter-sanctions on Russia, but also compensate Finland for loss of export earnings. Conscription isn't incompatible with NATO. It has been common practice during a big part of NATO's history.
