@jtfike He doesn't run any country. Finland is a parliamentary republic, which means the president enjoys residual powers only. The prime minister and his cabinet run the country.
14
Even if Stubb were a head case, he couldn't implement his crazy ideas. In Finland, the president has only residual powers.

@MossMini We make your 4G and 5G networks, for starters.

My great-grandmother hails from Gävle, Sweden, and I have Swedish roots from other ancestors as well, judging from a DNA test that I did: 50% Scandinavian and 50% Finnish. It's only because of my great-grandfather, who got terribly upset with Sweden for not properly helping Finland out during its existential wars with the Soviet Union, that we stopped speaking Swedish in the family. However, an aunt of mine switched back and my cousins are now native Swedish-speakers. I'd never dare to suggest they're not Finnish. They mix it up, though. It appears cursing is more effective in Finnish.

@slartibar The weather is not terrible. I moved back from the Netherlands and found Finland a tremendous improvement weather-wise. But I'm not a fan of eternal rain and wind.

@steamengine4719 You must be trolling. Paavo Väyrynen is a complete and utter joke, who's so full of himself that he failed to understand that the bulk of his supporters are deceased or demented by now. That's why he failed to garner enough support for his candidacy. He's a walking tragicomedy.

@sandybrown4957 Article 51 of the UN Charter infers that Ukraine is within its rights to respond to Russia's military aggression by attacking military targets on Russian soil. Summa summarum, Ukraine is on the right side of international law, Russia is not.
7
Got what, two desperate dictators?
6
@ChuckHuffmaster The US didn't do a thing for Finland, though. Not before, during or after WW2.
6
They say Lavrov has a good head on his shoulders. Has he advised Putin to issue a withdrawal order yet?
4
Stalin didn't spare his old friends either.
3
Our professor-president will lecture you to death on international affairs, but that's about it.
3
@ChuckHuffmaster Very indirectly. Finland just didn't feature in US strategy in any meaningful manner. Finland was an afterthought for Germany, too.
3
There's a sound reason why Kaja Kallas got picked to represent the EU on foreign affairs and security and not smiley-boy professor-president Stubb and his three things.
3
@manueldeabreu1980 Finland never partook in the Marshal Plan. Postwar, Finland did take out US loans, however, and somewhat naively from a European perspective, it thought said loans should be repaid.
2
Melodrama is more his thing.
2
We don't like them dictators. More your style.
2
@mreuben3 You must think Kallas is Finnish. Way to embarrass yourself.
2
@hypolyxa7207 Time to kick out the royals and get elected presidents to replace them. Iceland, too, has seen the light.
1
You're just saying that because Trump's military parade fell through.
1
@jamesedge219 That "genocide" is just a figment of your propagandists' imagination, which you parrot mindlessly. The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission established that Ukraine did not target any civilians in Donbas between 2014 and 2022, when the monitors were active there. I suggest you find another dead horse to flog.
1
@diannelafreniere2211 I take a dim view of people responding with a long string of laughing emoticons, but in your case, they would be warranted.
1
So it has come to that. The superpower wannabe needs the hermit kingdom to survive.
1
We had you at WEF. By the way, what happened to the NWO and it blood-drinking and shape-shifting Reptilians that featured so heavily in your earlier conspiracy theories? Have you abandoned them altogether? Such a shame -- that was amusing.
1
He's no Trump fan. Stubb is the keep-calm-and-carry-on type, like Finns in general. Our blood runs cooler than with most humans, and we successfully compete with the Brits in upper lip stiffness.
1
@difficultyhard6901 Classic liberalism is the term you're looking for, because Americans associate liberalism with social liberalism. European liberalism is centre right. Europe's liberals want to keep the social democrats at an arm's length at all times.
1
That would mean Old Bone Spurs finally seeing action. Trump specifically wanted the al-Tanf base in Syria to be kept.
1
Putin is crazier still, because he knows he won't survive his presidency.

I'm Finnish and I think we could've done much better with presidential runner-up Pekka Haavisto, who's much more accomplished in governance and international affairs. Stubb was a placeholder PM for a few short years, and demoted come next election. His party soon cast him aside, and he resigned as both finance minister and MP, ending his relatively brief career in Finnish day-to-day politics. Haavisto's problem was that he's openly gay and represents a party -- the Greens -- who're in decline. If you're looking for determined leadership in these transformational times, Kaja Kallas is your woman.
1
@laszlocarreidas9548 Yeah, but you fail to argue your case. You must think your unfounded opinion carries a lot of weight.
1
@laszlocarreidas9548 How *did you fail? Clearly, you don't know what arguing your case and unfounded opinion mean. To bend it from a spool of wire for you, you couldn't produce a single argument why you think the world of Stubb. I had a whole list. Give it try, like I luuurve Stubb because... he smiles a lot? See, smiling is an argument why Stubb could be perceived as a competent leader... well, in your book.
1
@laszlocarreidas9548 This discussion is pointless if you can't tell the difference between opinions and facts. I stated facts, whereas you're all opinion.
1
@laszlocarreidas9548 Duh, YouTube doesn't accept links. If you really are a Finn, you should know these facts already. Or if you're too young, have a gander at Stubb's Wikipedia page.

@petrholpuch7545 Don't you worry too much about Trump's grandstanding. Truth be told, the US doesn't reach NATO's 2% of GDP target either. Its extracurricular activities, which take place outside of NATO's strictly-defined area of responsibility, don't come free. It follows from US military doctrine that more than half of US military spending serves purposes other than NATO.
1
By which standard? I can't think of a single international ranking that puts Russia in top place. You?
1
They say that Lavrov, who was not privy to Putin's plans in 2014, was exasperated by Russia invading Crimea and Donbas. He has adapted well to Putin's new normal. For his sake, I hope he was paid in gold.
1
@ChuckHuffmaster That's a fanciful interpretation. Germany had sided with the USSR during the Winter War, but Hitler had a change of heart when Germany started preparing for Operation Barbarossa. Finland was offered arms and grain, both of which it needed desperately, especially the latter since it had lost its breadbasket in Karelia. Hitler never had clear plans for Finland, apart from making vague promises about rewarding Finland with large swathes of Russia should it participate in his crusade against Communism. Finland didn't fall for it and held back after recapturing its lost territories and occupying defensible positions. Interestingly, Germany fared relatively poorly at attacking the USSR from the very north of Scandinavia, so Finland's unwillingness to advance further didn't become an issue. It wasn't lost on the USA, which actively maintained diplomatic relations with Finland throughout WW2.
1
@bdleo300 I truly wonder if you're really European, but what I can tell is that you have a poor understanding of the EU's relationship vis-à-vis the US. Trump is busily gearing up for a trade war with the EU. Why on earth would one start a trade war with one's own colony? The EU is not Europe, by the way. Europe extends all the way to the Ural Mountains, deep inside Russia.
1
@pattymiller9040 The rules-based international order is under threat and you're spinning conspiracy theories.
1
Russia could surround the US with its anti-NATO, the CSTO -- if it actually still existed and hadn't died a silent death.
