  1.  @stevenunns2530  Russia does have inland waterways that allow small warships up to corvette size to sail between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea without passing through the Bosphorus Strait. It's slow-going, with numerous locks, speed limits, congestion and whatnot.

  4. I'm not rooting for Russia, but the Baltic Sea is very much about littoral warfare, which smaller warships like these missile corvettes excel at. In the archipelagos off Sweden and Finland, bigger warships are at a disadvantage owing to the shallow, treacherous waters. Even corvettes can fall prey to coastal troops armed with ATGMs.

  7. In the Baltic Sea, frigates are big warships. The Baltic nations have started to favour smaller corvettes instead. The Baltic Sea is not your average sea. It's shallow and the coastline can be very ragged. Bigger vessels have to keep to known sealanes, which is hardly ideal for warships.
