@mas2pek The Scandinavian countries have eradicated poverty and they're consistently among the Top 10 of the most democratic countries in the world. You can't accuse them of exploiting other countries either. Just a thought, but maybe China should adopt them a role model?

Considering that a very large proportion of the Hong Kong population descends from refugees from Communism, it's kowtowing to Beijing that bugs them.

@mas2pek Personal preferences aside, the Scandinavian model is the perfect model as far as the Scandinavians are concerned. Thanks to democracy, their electorates have it in their power to nix their welfare systems and the high taxation that goes with it, but this hasn't happened despite right-wing governments gaining power now and then. They only dare to nibble at the system, but any major changes would trigger an immediate voter backlash. Even the newly-formed far-right parties leave it be, only meekly suggesting that perhaps welfare shouldn't fully apply to migrants. It occurs to me that the Chinese have -- much like the Scandinavians -- a high tolerance for big government, so the Scandinavian model should be a good fit for China. But like in Scandinavia, it should go together with full democracy. The Scandinavian model is based on social harmony, and that can only be attained with democracy.

@rjcharlie I'm middle-aged, you silly Beijing fanboy. What have Taiwan and the Qing Dynasty got to do with Hong Kong? You're clearly struggling with both geography and history.

@rjcharlie I'm sure the Hongkongers wouldn't forcefully object to being part of a democratic China. The problem is, democratic China is an oxymoron. For the same reason, the CCP does not represent one fifth of humanity. The CCP represent a bunch of autocrats, who're not willing to share power.
