Simple. As the former colonial master, the UK is morally obliged to look after the well-being of their erstwhile subjects. Besides, those eligible are an economic asset to any developed country.

Great Britain has a not-so-proud colonial past, but its accomplishments in abolishing slavery are admirable. China lagged far, far behind in that respect.

@mountaindragon7289 Explain where I went wrong, or prove yourself to be a Beijing bot.

@cgchiang Let's stick to the topic. When exactly, in your interpretation, did China finally abolish slavery? Verifiable facts only, please.
2
@cgchiang Let's talk about Great Britain abolishing slavery throughout the British Empire in 1807. From then on, Britain would go to great lengths to stop the slave trade, seizing 1,600 slave ships and freeing 150,000 slaves onboard. China officially abolished slavery in 1910, more than hundred years after Britain. To add insult to injury, the practice nonetheless continued in China to 1949.

@cgchiang I've read my history books, even to the extent of earning a master's. It looks like you've done none of that.

Don't think so. Close to a million Hongkongers emigrated prior to and after the handover of Hong Kong to China. Taking that as a yardstick, I'd say that at least the same number of Hongkongers will leave this time. The figure can easily prove higher than that, since this time around many more in Hong Kong hold foreign passports, and for those who don't, countries other than the UK, too, are also loosening visa requirements. China's CCP is killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

@lucyblueeyes3858 I alluded to that in my earlier comment -- they're the ones with the foreign passports. They returned because China honoured the "one country, two systems" principle. Alas, no more.

@lucyblueeyes3858 And I personally know many Hongkongers who haven't given up their British and Canadian nationalities, so it's your word against mine. But personal observations aside, what matters is that Canada alone puts the number of its citizens in Hong Kong at 295,000. If (or when) they return, they'll fit right in, since Canada is already home to 500,000 Canadians of Hong Kong descent. I suppose you've never visited Vancouver. I would describe the city as Chinatown and more. Don't lecture me about the joint declaration and basic law. I was present when Chris Patten gave his farewell speech. Nor do I need the BBC to convince me that Beijing's unilaterally-imposed national security bill effective cancelled Hong Kong's autonomy.

@streetman6661 It's literally China's loss if they knowingly chase off a substantial part of Hong Kong's population. At the risk of repeating myself, the CCP is killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

@shutup51916 China doesn't own the people and whether or not they carry a BNO passport, they should be able to vote with their feet if China doesn't allow them to vote properly. You're making it appear as if the UK, upon their arrival, will will relieve them of their money and assets. That's a preposterous claim.
1
@shutup51916 Unlike in China, the rule of law applies in the UK. No one's taking away anyone's money. You live in a fantasy world.
1
@shutup51916 Rule of law doesn't exist in China. The CCP thinks nothing of overriding judges and flouting the law whenever they see fit. The same goes for the constitution. In China, the constitution is optional.
1
@shutup51916 I suggest you do some research on what "rule of law" means and how China views it. The latter appears to be a somewhat fluid affair, with CCP ideologists speaking of "rule by law" and "thin" rule of law. If you ask me, those are just silly euphemisms, just like China's "party-state democracy".
1
@shutup51916 I give up. You have no clue what "rule of law" entails. You just keep repeating the same dumb arguments.
1
@shutup51916 Pick up an encyclopaedia. These are well-established terms that you have no clue about.
1
@shutup51916 You have a fixation.
