  1.  @Gridlocked  It did appear that Russia backed down under NATO pressure. At best, it was a stalemate for Russia.

  2.  @geoffobrien1783  No one's claiming Russia really intended to attack. It's just that armies prepare for the worst and escalations do happen. Russia is a giant with feet of clay. Russia can't afford sustained warfare in Ukraine. It would be yet another Soviet-Afghan War type of scenario. That one bankrupted the USSR -- Russia would undergo the same fate.

  3. The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly deemed it an illegal annexation. If Russia wanted to do the pro-Russian Crimeans a favour, it didn't. They find themselves in international limbo now, citizens of a pariah state within a pariah state.
