I assembled military gas masks as a youngster. I kept one as a souvenir. More as a gesture than anything else, I had a friend, who was bringing a lorryload of aid supplies to the Polish-Ukrainian border, personally give it to the meanest-looking Ukrainian male he could find. Not only did he find a very mean-looking one, but also, this one had a sense of humour. The Ukrainian, who spoke very good English, was an army regular who was bringing his wife and daughters to safety in Poland. He said the gas mask would be a blessing in the dugouts on days that borscht was served.
