  2. In August 1944, a force of 22,250 men --- half of them Estonians -- successfully held off an advance by 136,830 Soviet troops in north-eastern Estonia. Soviet casualties were as high as 170,000 dead and wounded. That should give you an idea of the challenges involved in invading Estonia.
