You're very much dependent on the so-called West. The development aid, the generous low-interest loans and the remittances sent by your workers in the West -- if all that were to stop, you'd be left high and dry. In other words, you'd be on a popcorn-only diet.

Russia and North Korea are at odds with international law by instigating and/or engaging in military aggression -- that's what this is about. Defensive arrangements, like NATO and the military co-operation between the US and South Korea, are something else.

@Aleph-alpha Not all "Western" countries are equally active in development aid, but development loans issued by the governments of countries that are serious about helping developing countries don't impose overly strict conditions or demand collateral like China does. So, no, China does sound worse. I've seen the Chinese build roads in Kenya that were washed away by the rains shortly after. Nonetheless, the Kenyans were still stuck with the Chinese loans. We built roads that lasted, free of charge to Kenya, and we hired locals where we could. The Chinese used an all-Chinese workforce, which they fed poorly, too. We had them over for rice, till their bosses forbade it.

@koiguidenishikigoi4972 France routinely votes against Israel when the latter's sheninagans come up in the UN's Security Council -- in total opposition to the US, which vetoes everything as a matter of routine. I suspect you're too young to remember 'Freedom Fries' -- long story short, the US was disgusted with France for not supporting the Iraq War, although France druly noted that concrete evidence of Saddam's WMDs was still missing. If France is a US vassal, it makes a very poor one. You cherry-pick facts.

These are North Korean troops, trained and organised as cohesive units by the totalitarian North Korean state, which spends a record share of its GDP on its military. That sets them miles apart from the individuals -- many of whom are incompetent or unfit adventurers -- who've volunteered piecemeal for military service in Ukraine and who mostly lack military training in any shape or form. Also, of those initially deemed fit, many give up after a few months or after their first scary situation. If you can't distinguish between the regular military and these irregulars, you should enlist and see for yourself what being in the military entails.

@nklow88 35% world production of what, goods or services? Service economy, does that ring a bell? Guess which one, goods or services, the EU and the US excel in? Moreover, China, the undisputed global manufacturing hub, excels in final assembly, which adds relatively little value to manufactured goods. Yet there's a seemingly huge trade imbalance with China, but the Chinese manufacturers buy their high-value components abroad, which means the trade surplus doesn't stay in China. You should read case studies featuring the iPhone. They make fascinating reading, but it's cringeworthy if you're Chinese. Finally, multinationals are busily derisking, shifting final assembly to other low-cost countries -- at China's expense, and much to Xi's chagrin.

@izajahmed8863 I think you're being deliberately obtuse. Private lenders can charge whatever interest rate they see fit. It's a case of caveat emptor. However, government-backed loans to developing countries are a case apart. Often, they're forgiven, too, and we call it development aid. Keep your silly anti-Western conspiracy theories to yourself. Incidentally, your precious Russia was and remains the biggest coloniser of them all. The tsars used to boast about their territorial conquests, and demand recognition as a colonial power from the others. Soviet historical revisionism tried to erase that, but it only worked on you fanboys. Oh, and we have no colonial history. Never took part in any of it.

@izajahmed8863 Why would I lie about such a thing? I spent a year working in development aid in the early eighties, in Kenya's Kakamega county. We were building a road from Mumias to Kakamega. I can't find anything about our project on the internet apart from vague references to undigitized publications, so I'm not surprised you're not finding anything about the Chinese fiasco -- assuming you did try. I had left to do my military service when the rains came, but I did bump into a former colleague afterwards, who told me all about the Chinese fiasco. He was (he's deceased now) a born-again Christian who wished nothing but the best for all humankind, so he wasn't relishing it and much less lying about it. 2%? Like I said, we didn't charge a dime for our road.
