You've got it backwards. Unlike the West, Russia very much wanted to be the colonial master in Ukraine, but to the Kremlin's surprise, Ukraine was having none of it. The Kremlin has now officially revised its estimate from two days to three years. Still, it's a long wait for Russia's inevitable defeat.

I'm wondering what the hullabaloo is about as well. My uncle volunteered to fight in WW2 when he was 17. He had joined the territorial army at 16. His first combat assignment took place a few days shy of him turning 18. Myself, I concluded my national service at age 19, after which I could be called up at a moment's notice. We thought nothing of it.

It's not inconceivable that Russia will have to withdraw from east Ukraine in order to keep Crimea. Even if peace is restored with Crimea under continued Russian occupation, Crimea will remain an international pariah, even more so than Russia proper. It will slowly dawn of the apathetic Russians that it wasn't worth it. The question is, will that happen before Putin dies of old age, or will there be a colour revolution that sends Putin packing off to China or North Korea?

@Niklez7 Russia can't mobilise because it's already struggling to keep its war economy ticking over. And it's not just about pouring hapless Russians into the meat grinder in Ukraine, but also, Russia is losing two to three times as many as draft dodgers. That ratio will only grow when Muscovites and Petersburgians, who've been spared so far, receive their call-up papers. I don't know how we can accommodate that many asylum seekers.

Desperate? The average age of US combat soldiers in Vietnam was nineteen. There's a song about that. N-n-n-n-nineteen something something.

@douglasbartee2363 Sure thing.

@TheBlackIdentety You're ill-informed. Conscription is more common in "the East". Your precious Russia does it, too.

Or prisoners. Wait...

@chebysh8047 Rule of law isn't observed very closely in Russia. Russia has been putting recruitment offices at border checkpoints. Would-be draft dodgers know to keep away.

Vote... sorry, I forget the scare quotes... "vote" for a KGB operative and you'll end up with a dictator for a president.
