  3. Little do you know. I personally experienced how after the Beirut barrack bombings, the hard-hit French were soon back in Lebanon. The Americans never made a comeback. Also, we were in the habit of using the French as a bogeyman. If the locals didn't behave, we told them the French would get involved, and nobody wants that. There were nods all along and things quieted down. I expect that if we had threatened them with the Americans, the reverse would've been true.
