  1. Your research is a sham, I'm afraid. When the Soviet Union fell apart, its military arsenal was divvied up among the 15 independent states that were subsequently formed. A number of these states also inherited nuclear weapons in addition to conventional weapons, but the nuclear weapons were eventually all transferred to the Russian Federation. In Ukraine's case this occurred in 1994, but only after Russia had given Ukraine guarantees to respect its existing borders. That's clearly something that slipped Putin's mind.

  3.  @robertluvisia  For sure, Russia has already lost more in that respect than it has gained. New NATO members Finland and Sweden have as much or possibly even more strategic value than Ukraine. Russia now finds itself bottled up in the far corner of the Gulf of Finland and in the Arctic, it is completely surrounded by NATO. This doesn't bode well for Russia's grand plans for the Arctic. What is a superpower hasbeen/wannabe to do? Concentrate its naval efforts on its diminutive Caspian Flotilla?
