Inside Russia, where Ukraine has no territorial ambitions, Ukraine can well afford to conduct a defence in depth, constantly falling back to prepared positions and maximising Russian losses, while incurring fewer of their own. Conventional wisdom has it that Russia needs thrice as many troops to drive the defending Ukrainians off, but knowing Russia's inability to conduct combined arms operations, the casualty rate will be equally lopsided.
