Well, the US is sawing off the branch it's sitting on. The Arctic is fast gaining in strategic importance, and the US is by its own admission weak in arctic warfare, especially at sea. The US had to rope in Canada and Finland to upgrade and expand its fleet of icebreakers, which are direly needed for surface warfare in the Arctic. If conventional US warships can't get through the ice, they're useless. China is another matter. If it comes to a showdown between the US and China, Russia is surely going to make sure to tie up as many US forces as possible. Without NATO, Europe won't feel obliged to counter-balance Russia. US military strategists keep saying that NATO is more needed than ever, with China slowly but surely emerging as the second superpower. Trump hasn't read the memo.
