As a aristocrat and soldier, he had a disdain for politics and politicians, Hitler included, which set him apart from the predominantly Swedish-speaking aristocracy in Finland, who were quite sympathetic to Hitler. After all, Mannerheim was in his element as a courtier in Saint Petersburg. If anything, he was a royalist.
