  3. New colonial master? Russia is an old hand at colonialism, one of the oldest. They didn't need to take part in the 'Scramble for Africa', since they had a whole backyard to colonise. Uniquely, Russia still holds on to most of its colonies, while all the other colonial powers have decolonised long since.
