  1. Just a wild guess, but maybe it's because the Taliban, when they previously held power in Afghanistan, made a mockery of human rights? The Taliban leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, is ultra-religious and old guard -- hardly a reformer. Giving the "new" Taliban the benefit of the doubt is like giving the Nazis a second chance. The Nazis had the odd intellectual in their ranks as well.
