  1. When I served there in the late 80s, the Israelis mortared us "by accident". It was hard to respond without heavy weapons of our own. Later, they told us they had a few mortar bombs fall short -- as if we hadn't noticed. My cousin followed in my footsteps and spent a rotation serving alongside the Irish. He said they were the quintessential UN peacekeepers. Disciplined and resolute, yet humane.

  5.  @JackFieldBand  When pressed on the matter, neither party wants UNIFIL to leave. However, peace is not something either party really wants, so the UN should leave and let them stew in their own juice.

  6. I know of a lucrative arms deal that Israel lost as a result of causing fatalities among a certain UNIFIL contingent. Israel needs exports to keep fighting its wars, Uncle Sam's support notwithstanding.
