His most bellicose adherents go as far as suggesting that attack is the best defence. When the West reacts and bolsters its defences after decades of post-Cold War neglect, he says it's "insane".

Sure, that Russia is a big spender, outspending everyone in Europe both in absolute and relative terms. After much grumbling but finally realising the threat that Putin poses to world peace, the Euros promised to up their defence spending to 2% of GDP. Russia nearly doubles that, topping even the gun-crazy Yanks. Who's the warmonger now?

  8. Alex Silver Nice try. I guess I should be grateful because you're at least trying. Much of US military spending has gone into a money pit called the Iraq War. Nothing to do with NATO -- in fact, it nearly tore the alliance apart. Part of me wishes it had. Let's take Canada. To show you're not a lazy bum after all, do the math and calculate whose military spending -- Russia's or Canada's -- by square km tops the other's. Come on.
