Firstly, what do you think, will "rump-EU" be as likely to abide by UK rules as vice versa? You grossly exaggerate the UK's clout in trade negotiations. It's more like the UK will like it or lump it when the Eurocrats dream up a new rule. Secondly, the net payers in the EU-without-UK will see a boost in exports -- at the expense of the UK. Initially, there will be a deficit in the EU budget, but the UK's pain will be worse. I don't relish being a EU net payer (a bigger one than the average Briton, I should add), but I have the presence of mind to realise that you've got to spend money to make money.

posterboyuk1 Before you start about protectionism, you need to realise that trade blocs are about trade blocks. The British Empire, which Brexiters secretly pine for, was the worst. Even if such excesses belong to the past, we can safely assume that no trade bloc will ever put the interests of outsiders before those of its members. The EU's democracy deficit is the result of lack of progress in European integration. Ironically, it's been held up by the purest form of democracy: plebiscites. It sounds like a cop-out, but it does seem Europe is not ready for more democracy. You're engaging in wishful thinking if you believe EU-critical mainland voters stand behind Britain in all of this. Even the most reform-minded of them see that Britain is after exclusive privileges, not reforms that would benefit the EU as a whole. With things being as they are, I personally believe Britain needs some time in the desert no matter how the referendum turns out. You Brits desperately need to figure out your place in this world. Not in a bygone one.
