  2. Russia trying to join the EU would not only be an exercise in futility, but also an exercise in embarrassment. More so even than Turkey, Russia falls short of the accession criteria -- democracy, the rule of law, human rights, respect for and protection of minorities, the existence of a functioning market economy, etc., etc.

  3. It's not up to the Russian mafia. It's up to the EU member states whether to let Russia in or not. It takes only one veto and the whole deal is off. If no one else, the Baltic states aren't going to waste time making their opposition known.

  4. You're not up-to-date on things. There's most definitely such a thing as EU citizenship. Currently it's reserved for citizens of member states only, but the rules can be changed.
