Comments by "peabase" (@peabase) on "New bridge cements Russia’s hold on Crimea" video.
The fact of the matter is that an overwhelming majority of countries do not recognise Russia's sovereignty over Crimea. Yes, just like all sovereign states, they happen to be UN members, but even if the UN disbanded tomorrow, Russia would still find itself isolated.

laurejon, it's not a matter of self-determination. Russia annexed Crimea illegally and now suffers international sanctions because of it. Had it been about Crimean self-determination, Russia -- or rather, the Crimeans -- could've gone about it differently, without bringing on the sanctions that have put a serious dent in the Russian economy.

TD, there lies your problem. The referendum met with rejection worldwide.

TD, I am talking about the world at large, and you're talking about a single country, Russia, that also engineered the annexation of Crimea to begin with. Of course they didn't reject the referendum that "validated" their illegal actions.
4
TD, a full 100 countries deemed the referendum illegal, while only 11 thought it legal. So if loss of territorial influence is your explanation why they did so, say, Micronesia condemn the referendum? Try harder, you aren't convincing anyone.

TD, I made a factual observation that your view -- and that of Russia -- is a marginal one. The world overwhelmingly rejected the validity of the Crimean referendum and condemned the annexation of Crimea -- since you like exact figures, 90% said so. And this vote took place in the UN General Assembly, so there was no fraud or other irregularities, as has been suspected of the Crimean referendum. Try refuting my facts rather than make this a matter of your opinion against mine (which I haven't brought forward). You might also want to produce something more convincing than your humble, butt-hurt opinion that the USA (as you apparently insinuate) pressured 99 UN members to vote their way. Otherwise, you're just flapping your gums.

laurejon, not true, the sanctions have been renewed time and again. Each time there was a discussion as to whether they're still justified. And each time the EU members agreed unanimously to continue. The sanctions aren't all-encompassing, nor would it make sense to completely isolate Russia. Trump may relent on sanctioning Russia, but I very much doubt congress agrees. Putin needs to understand that his actions have consequences.

@markojovanovic1750 You're skirting the issue, the illegal landgrab Russia did at Ukraine's expense.

goran, you managed a comment that's devoid of relevant content. Better watch your spelling too. *low-life, *useful, *self-respect, *sense.

@aleksandrkrupenko9377 You say it's only a matter of Russian sovereignty. First and foremost, it's a matter of Ukrainian sovereignty, which Russia agreed to respect after the break-up of the USSR --- and now clearly hasn't. Not only that, Russia broke the UN Charter. For that alone, Russia deserves to be kicked out of the Security Council. Again, your 97% isn't an internationally recognised figure, so it is of no consequence. You may want to try something else than your old and tired whataboutism.

@51greenstone So you decided to chime in with an inane comment.

@olegvasilevskiy5815 Still more whataboutism. Try to keep your comment relevant.

@pieterbezuidenhout2741 Why don't you come clean and call yourself POETINTROL? I have nothing with the US. Try to add something relevant to the discussion, to which you've only added noise.

@51greenstone Ask the Turkish Cypriots if the international embargo that they've had to endure for close to 40 years is any fun.

@louisecorchevolle9241 ...and you're trying to rewrite history, in true Soviet-style. There was never any Ukrainian occupation of Crimea. Like I wrote earlier, the Crimeans could've pursued independence though the UN, but no, Putin surprised them -- or rather, everyone, including his own government -- with it. And now they're relegated to international isolation. And Russia, economic sanctions. None of it was worth it.

@learning7140 Yet another whataboutist reports for duty. Doesn't your lot have anything else?
